Last month I celebrated my 80th Birthday. It all started with a Mass and Luncheon attended by over three hundred people at Blessed Sacrament Church, my former Parish. It was a great celebration and it was so good to see so many old friends in attendance. After that a number of other groups also joined in the celebration. I began to get very good at blowing out candles. I am very grateful to my brother Knights of the 4th Degree for all you did to make this birthday so very memorable for me. It made me very proud to see the number of men turn out for the color guard at the Mass. It made me very proud to be associated with all of you. Thank you all so very much. Let's do it again when I turn 90!

Last Sunday we celebrated to Feast of the Epiphany when we commemorated the arrival of the Magi or Three Kings at Bethlehem. This feast is celebrated with great gusto by our Hispanic Brothers and Sisters. But the word "Epiphany" means a manifestation, or the opening of our eyes to make something known. The Magi represent all the people of world who are awaiting the arrival of the Savior. The meaning of the story it that Jesus came to bring salvation to all people of good faith. It is interesting to note that for many centuries the Feast of Epiphany included three celebrations, three Epiphanies. The first was the story of the Magi. The second was the Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan River. When Jesus stepped into the water, the Holy Spirit, in the form of a Dove, came to rest over Him and the voice of the Father was heard to say. "This is my Son, listen to Him". At that moment the eyes of all were opened to see the Trinity. At the Wedding Feast at Cana, Jesus performed his first miracle by changing water into wine and the eyes of the Apostles were opened to recognize that Jesus was not just an ordinary Preacher but the He had divine power. Today in the Latin Church we no longer celebrate the three epiphanies together. This year the Baptism of Jesus was celebrated on Monday, January 8 and the First Miracle at Cana is no longer celebrated as a separate feast day.

Actually all of us have experienced our own Epiphanies in our lives. Those special moments when our eyes were opened and we encountered Jesus in a very special way. It may have occurred on a special day like our First Communion or Confirmation. It may have happened when we were gravely sick and frightened or at the death of a loved one. It may have happened at a spiritual retreat or at some special time of private prayer. Treasure those Epiphanies; they were God's special gift to you. And please be aware that that there are probably more personal Epiphanies to come. Welcome them when they arrive.
