WAVE PARADE ON FRIDAY, MAY 15 TO CELEBRATE WWII VET'S 95TH BIRTHDAY TO HELP RAISE FUNDS FOR FOOD BANK OF SOMERSET COUNTY:

HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Frank DeVita of Bridgewater NJ, turns 95 on Friday May 15th, one of the last surviving WWII veterans from Normandy.
  • Following the 75thanniversary of VE (Victory in Europe) Day last week, and with Memorial Day just around the corner, it is important to honor those who have served us.
  • Donations being made to Knights of Columbus (5959) “No Neighbor Left Behind” campaign to support The Food Bank Network of Somerset County and their Pandemic Relief efforts - Click her to access GoFundMe page
More about Frank DeVita & the Wave Parade:

Organized by his fellow members of the Knights of Columbus (5959) and some of Frank’s neighbors, the Wave Parade will abide by all social distancing and gathering regulations, and safety is considered a priority – at the gathering point for the vehicles as well as at the DeVita home in Bridgewater.

Being in the service, and most especially his D-Day experiences, isn’t something that Frank talked about openly until recently.
As a member of the United States Coast Guard assigned to the USS Samuel Chase, Frank served as a gunner’s mate third class and crewed a Higgins boat on 15 D-Day landings. Frank was a part of the first wave, on June 6, 1944, that brought the Big Red One into Omaha Beach, and to this day still wonders how he survived.

In the last 6 years, Frank has opened up and told his story many times and in many ways, including last year on the 75th anniversary of WWII, in an profile titled "To Hell and Back" featured in the Knights of Columbus monthly magazine, Click to read online Columbia.

Like all those who survived D-Day, he persevered. After the war, he came home, moved to New Jersey from Brooklyn, and started a family, and led a humble life. His was a family who gathered lovingly at the table for a good meal for every occasion; and food was a defining characteristic of his family culture. In one interview with iHeart Radio, “Veteran Stories of Hunger and War,” (link below) Frank gushed about the love of his life, Dorothy. He talked about generations of family recipes and how important they were to the extended family; and he talked about how important those times at the table were for him as he found ways to cope with the memories of WWII.

Food on the table has always been important to Frank. Therefore , in recognition of those that drive by to wish Frank a happy birthday, his family will be making a donation to the Knights of Columbus (#5959) "Leave No Neighbor Behind" fundraiser to support The Food Bank Network of Somerset County and their Pandemic Relief efforts. They are proud to support the Knights of Columbus fundraiser to help put food on the table of those in need during this time of need.
