Thank you Br. Brother Al Beronio for submitting your Religious and Civil Rights article, we are looking forward to your periodic articles to enlighten us on matters that are timeless and always so important.

Veterans Ceremony begins promptly at 4 pm, contact FDD Stan Serafin via email stans123@optonline.net to get your tickets.

Religious and Civil Rights

Br. Alfred Beronio
Brothers, family and supporters,

I am writing this article in my role as Council 5959 Religious and Civil Rights Chairman. Our Grand Knight has suggested that the various Chairs and Directors in the council make shorter reports at the meeting but expand on them for publication in the Wind of the Hills. This makes sense on a number of levels.

First we have to recognise that any reports given at a meeting are usually heard by only a handful of the 200+ Brothers who comprise our Council. Further, the remarks made are transient and quickly forgotten: the opportunity to follow through by urging the Brothers to visit recommended websites or by writing to our elected representatives is not easy to facilitate at a meeting.

I welcome the suggestion for other reasons. We all realise that not everyone has the time, inclination or passion to acquaint themselves with all the issues confronting our society and, more specifically, our church. Let me paraphrase a quote often attributed (incorrectly) to Mark Twain: One must select wisely a source of news; otherwise it would be better to be uninformed than misinformed.” Couple that with the advice of our Founding Fathers who felt that “An educated citizenry is a vital requisite for our survival as a free people”.

Unfortunately, working against this good advice is what most of our members face: the demand on one’s time of jobs, family responsibilities, volunteer obligations and the like. On the other hand, I enjoy the freedom that retirement offers to devote time and energy to following many of the topical items that consume so much TV time, newsprint, email space, and mailings.

My goal will be to distill this important information and get it to our Council Brothers in a concise, informative, and useful form and, when appropriate, a clear path to act on it.

Fraternally Yours in Christ,

Brother Albert Beronio
Religions and Civil Rights Chairman

FRANK DEVITA TO THROW FIRST PITCH

On Sunday, August 25, 2019, 4:00 PM Sharp

Frank DeVita, a 94-year-old WWII Veteran and member of the Knights of Columbus, Martinsville NJ Council 5959, has been interviewed on television by Tom Brokaw, you’ve read about him in the COLUMBIA MAGAZINE, and now he will be at the TD Ballpark in Bridgewater.

Frank has been invited by Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 452 to throw out the ballgame’s first pitch to celebrate the 17th Annual Veterans of America Day. The ceremony will be held on Sunday, August 25, 2019, and will start at 4 PM sharp.

At age 18 Frank joined the Coast Guard serving aboard the USS Samuel Chase, a Navy attack transport. During World War II, Frank participated in five U.S. amphibious invasions in the European Theater of Operations: North Africa, Sicily, Salerno, D-Day invasion of Normandy, and Southern France. In 1945 in the Pacific Theater, Frank stood duty at Okinawa in the aftermath of its invasion and under frequent air attacks. For his service in Normandy, France, the French Government awarded Frank the distinguished Legion of Honor Medal established in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte, which is the highest French Order of Merit for the military.

After the war, Frank followed his father in the garment industry, married Dorothy, who he met in kindergarten, and raised three children. Today, Frank spends much of his time answering calls for interviews and seminars. He has returned to Normandy 11 times, given countless talks at schools and churches and still finds time to volunteer with the Knights of Columbus in Martinsville, Council 5959. During the Ballgame’s First Pitch Ceremony, Frank will be presented with an award from the State Deputy of the Knights of Columbus, Vincent Travormina, in recognition of his service to our country.

Veterans attending the ballgame are free--see attached flyer for details. Everyone is asked to sit behind first base to show support for Frank and all the Veterans.
