FRANK DEVITA TO THROW FIRST PITCH
Frank DeVita, 94-year-old WWII Veteran, has been interviewed on television by Tom Brokaw, you’ve read about him in the COLUMBIA MAGAZINE, and now he will be at the TD Ballpark in Bridgewater.
On Sunday, August 25, 2019, Frank has been invited by Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 452 to throw out the ballgame’s first pitch to celebrate the 17th Annual Veterans of America Day.
At age 18 Frank joined the Coast Guard serving aboard the USS Samuel Chase, a Navy attack transport. During World War II, Frank participated in five U.S. amphibious invasions in the European Theater of Operations: North Africa, Sicily, Salerno, D-Day invasion of Normandy, and Southern France. In 1945 in the Pacific Theater, Frank stood duty at Okinawa in the aftermath of its invasion and under frequent air attacks. For his service in Normandy, France, the French Government awarded Frank the distinguished Legion of Honor Medal established in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte, which is the highest French Order of Merit for the military.
After the war, Frank followed his father in the garment industry, married Dorothy, who he met in kindergarten, and raised three children. Today, Frank spends much of his time answering calls for interviews and seminars. He has returned to Normandy 11 times, given countless talks at schools and churches and still finds time to volunteer with the Knights of Columbus in Martinsville, Council 5959. During the Ballgame’s First Pitch Ceremony, Frank will be presented with an award from the State Deputy of the Knights of Columbus, Vincent Travormina, in recognition of his service to our country.
Veterans attending the ballgame are free--see attached flyer for details. Everyone is asked to sit behind first base to show support for Frank and all the Veterans.
